Test of Yeti Passion three sleeping bag

29. July 2014 By Bjarke Rosenbeck Leave a Comment

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAIf you design a sleeping bag based on the criteria to use light, quality materials and have the know-how to put it all together, you end up with a product which will thrill outdoor enthusiast around the globe.

That’s my impression of the Passion sleeping-bags from German producer Yeti.

It was love at first sight and after spending several nights with (in) this beauty, it proved to be love that lasts. You have been warned, the sleeping bags are both exclusive and expensive, don’t try it unless you are willing to go all the way!

Yeti Passion comes in a storage bag, to prevent the down from being damaged. It is standard for most sleeping bags and I always expect that the manufacturer provide such a bag when I buy a quality down sleeping bag.

The three models

The next thing I notice is the extremely small packbag included. Yeti Passion Three (which was our test model) has a comfort temperature of +7 ° C and a maximum of +3 ° C. Can it really fit in this tiny packbag, which lacks compression straps? It’s a lightweight product and straps for compressing are obviously considered excess weight!

Apart from the bag we tested, Yeti Passion comes in two additional models. The Yeti Passion One weighing 265 grams (Size Medium), with a comfort temperature of +15 ° C and a maximum of +12 ° C. You bring this sleeping bag when you go for longer treks and sleep inside cabins during summer season. The last model is the Yeti Passion Five weighing in at 690 grams (Size Medium) with a comfort temperature of -2 ° C and a maximum of 7 ° C. This extends the use of the bag (compared to the Passion One) until late fall and early spring. For most users this will be too warm during summer season.

Quality Sleeping bag

Weight and size is one thing, but obviously, the most important thing is the sleeping bag itself. When it comes to the Passion series you will not be disappointed with the quality! The outer and inner material is both made of the same thin nylon (link: LightyGram). It feels soft and follows the bag’s shape. There is a reinforced edge where the zipper runs. In line with the lightweight production, the edge is not over done, but works as intended. I have not yet experienced the zipper getting stuck.

The down Yeti uses is of the absolute highest quality, set to 900 + on the European scale, and with a 97/3 down/feather ratio. The 900+ indicates the CUIN value, which describes the downs ability to rise and create the cavity, which provides heat capacity.

All numbers signal quality and exquisiteness across the board, and Yeti Passion live up to its product description. We can take pictures, we can shoot video, but it is only when you stand with the product in your own hands, you can feel the unsurpassed quality of this sleeping bag. Of all the sleeping bags I have ever had in my hands, only Yeti and American Western Mountaineering stand out to such an extent.

The Yeti Passion sleeping bags are for the weight fanatic who only wants the lightest and best products, and accepts that details as a warm collar, DWR water repellent uppers or a pocket for small items are excluded.

Yeti Passion, my soft, warm and lovely friend in the night. The only right rating for you is the highest.
